What is IP ?

IP is short for Internet Protocol, and is pronounced as two separate letters.  IP specifies the format of Internet packets of information, also called datagrams, and the addressing scheme.  Most networks combine IP with a higher-level protocol called Transport Control Protocol (TCP) which establishes a virtual connection between a destination and source address.

How IP works

IP itself works like a postal system by allowing you to address a package and drop it into the system, even though there is no direct link between you and the recipient.  TCP/IP, on the other hand, establishes a connection between two hosts so that they can send messages back and forth for a period of time.

IP Address

An IP Address is simply a unique number, or address which identifies a specific node in the Internet.  Although, an IP Address does uniquely identify a specific computer on the Internet cloud, it doesn't really identify the person using that computer, since many people share a single computer or Internet connection provided by ISPs and corporations, and IP Addresses can be changed fairly easily.
