Baris Woman # 9326 |
This is a magnificently unique hand crafted native hanging art sculpture of a tribal Baris woman. What makes this particular sculpture extremely extraordinary and special is that it has been crafted with primitive tribal metal coins. These primitive coins were originally made on the tropical island of Lombok in the south Pacific. The coins used in this interesting item are extremely unusual in that they all contain a square hole cut into the center of each coin. The exact reason for this hole and a complete understanding of the coins purpose is uncertain, however it is assumed that they were once used for trading by primitive tribes living on the island of Lombok. It is unknown exactly when these coins began to appear on the island of Bali, however they are now used to create several items which apparently have special magical and spiritual powers. We have collected and offer a number of these such items, which can be found associated with Balinese offerings and ceremonies. Although this particular item is not usually found in Balinese temples, it does represent a special connection to the spiritual world through war offerings. The character in this sculpture represents a dancer from the Baris Gede. The Baris Gede is a stately war dance practiced and performed on the island of Bali. Every well-educated Balinese prince must be able to dance the Baris by the time he enters middle age. The Baris requires a lengthy and rigorous training in order to obtain the necessary skill and flexibility. The primitive coins used in this sculpture brilliantly represent and highlight the war costumes worn by Baris dancers as they enact mock battles during the performances. This mysterious item is almost impossible to find anywhere else and it represents a direct connection to the war-like history of primitive cultures. This spectacular sculpture would make a great addition and/or center piece for any serious collector of objects and artifacts from primitive and native cultures. |
